軽井沢というのは、ブラック・ホールのような土地で、その面積は、年々加速度的な膨張を続けています。すなわち、周りの土地が何故か次々に軽井沢と名前を変えて行ってしまうのです。沓掛が「中軽井沢」になったのはまだいいとして、横川が「東軽井沢」、信濃追分が「西軽井沢」、浅間山の北の群馬県側が「北軽井沢」、さらにその北が「奥軽井沢」となるに至っては、もはや量子力学理論の助けを借りなければ、説明のつけようがありません。この分では、そう遠くない将来、高崎が「軽井沢下」、浦和が「軽井沢前」、練馬が「軽井沢入り口」と名前を変え、やがては、日本全土が軽井沢になってしまうことでしょう。

しかし、本当に「軽井沢」と言えるのは、上図に示したように、国道18号の北、旧軽ロータリーを中心とした、ほんの一区画に過ぎません。浅間山が爆発したら火山弾が飛んで来るような場所を、軽井沢と呼ぶのはやめてもらいたいものです。あなたも、塩尻湖のテニス民宿でテニスの真似ごとをして来たくらいで、「軽井沢に行って来た」と友だちに言うのはやめましょう。
